The north coastal area receives the least amount of sunshine in the state. Hailstorms usually occur each year, but are generally light and cover small areas. Rarely is there severe weather such as tornadoes or flooding. The Pacific Ocean is an influencing factor on the climate, which helps moderate temperatures year round. That's not to say it never rains here - it receives an average of 36.3 inches per year, mostly in the winter and early spring. On average, this region of the state receives less rainfall than that of Atlanta, Houston, Indianapolis or Seattle. The Northwest Region of Oregon, near the city of Portland, enjoys a year round mild climate, with much less rain than the stereotype cities of the rainy Pacific Northwest. Vancouver also has a vibrant arts community and a popular 4th of July fireworks display on the grounds of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Other attractions include the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1848 Covington House, the Carnegie Library, the 1867 Slocum House and the Clark County Historical Museum. The city was named one of the National Register of Historic Places "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" for 2003. Vancouver contains a fine variety of architecture, from Victorian homes and Craftsmen bungalows to war-time tract houses and ranch-style homes. Much has already been completed and plans are underway for a Waterfront Redevelopment and a Columbia River crossing project that will include a new 12-lane bridge and transit along I-5 from Jantzen Beach to downtown. Starting in 1997, city officials made a decision to dedicate the next 15-20 years to revitalize a large portion of the downtown area. Vancouver successfully combines the excitement and opportunities of a large metropolis with abundant small-town charm. The incredible Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is just 30 minutes to the east of the city. The Pacific Coast is about 90 miles to the west of Vancouver, and the Cascade Mountain Range lies to the east. It is the fourth largest city in the state of Washington. As of July, 2009, the estimated population was 165,809. Vancouver lies on the north bank of the Columbia River, directly across from Portland, Oregon in southwestern Washington.
